And Flacco is about to receive a lot more than the new Corvette after taking home the world title and MVP honors. <br /><br />The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever with an estimated 450 horsepower (335 kW and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 Nm). In a shot across the bows of both Ford and Chrysler, GM says it won't use a V6 engine adapted from passenger car applications. Instead, it developed the 4.3-liter engine based on its proven truck-duty architecture.<br /><br />Indoors, both trucks now boast completely new interiors with a focus on soft-touch materials. Drivers are now met with a gauge cluster that features a 4.2-inch color information display, and the new trucks can be had with up to five USB ports, four 12-volt outlets and one SD card slot. The option sheet also features the IntelliLink connectivity system, displayed through a high-definition eight-inch color touchscreen interface.<br /><br />The new Silverado has a more masculine and muscular exterior, with a higher hood and new headlamps. <br /><br />As for the GMC Sierra, it will come with a new generation of its own connectivity system known as IntelliLink. Being the first full-size pickup to feature standard projector-beam headlights, the Sierra will also boast a signature LED light pattern that helps accent the headlights, with discreet LED accent Sierra’s bold new exterior houses one of three all-new EcoTec3 engines, a fully updated cabin with available next-generation IntelliLink connectivity and other features designed for the most discerning truck owners.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>“Our engineers and designers left nothing on the table when developing this latest Sierra pickup,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing. “These trucks have all the power and capability that’s expected in today’s market, excellent fuel efficiency, plus a lot of unexpected, purposeful features developed with truck owners in mind.”</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>In addition to all-new design and technology, the 2014 Sierra boasts the longest list of standard features ever for a full-size GMC pickup. From connectivity solutions, to a standard tie-down system in the rear, to the segment’s only standard projector beam headlamps, many premium features are found on each and every all-new Sierra.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>New EcoTec3 engines</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Sierra’s engine portfolio is updated for 2014 with the goal of increased in power, torque and fuel efficiency across the board. There will be a 4.3L V-6, a 5.3L V-8 and a 6.2L V-8 offered, all from a shared EcoTec3 engine family. Each engine features standard direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, which means they seamlessly switch to run on four cylinders during light-load driving to save fuel.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>The increased power and efficiency of the new engines are the result of more than 10 million hours of sophisticated computer modeling, more than half of which were used to make the best of the combustion process.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>The new 4.3L V-6 EcoTec3 engine will offer improved torque and towing capacity for the six in 10 truck owners who tow.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>“Rather than adapting a V-6 intended for use in passenger cars, we built a new engine from the ground up based on the unique demands of a truck,” said Jordan Lee, powertrain chief engineer. “Sierra’s 4.3L shares its basic design architecture with the latest iterations of the V-8 engines that GMC owners have trusted for generations.”</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Today’s Sierra offers the best V-8 fuel economy in the industry and the new 5.3L EcoTec3 engine features significant updates intended to make it even more efficient. The available 6.2L V-8 EcoTec3 is engineered to provide outstanding capability.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>SAE-certified horsepower and torque ratings and EPA fuel economy estimates for the new Sierra are not yet available, but are expected to be finalized early next year.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>With the new engine designs and additional developments, customers should expect Sierra’s second-generation Active Fuel Management to be more seamless and capable of operating longer in four-cylinder mode.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>All three engines use lightweight aluminum blocks and heads and are mated with durable six-speed automatic transmissions. A “cruise grade braking” feature down-shifts the transmission on downgrades, which is intended to reduce brake wear. V-8 models use new, larger 9.5- and 9.76-inch rear axles with the strength to accommodate the engines’ higher output. Final power and torque ratings will be announced later.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>Duralife brake rotors and electric power steering</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Strong brakes are important for stopping trucks, whether they’re full of people, payload or both. The 2014 Sierra features four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife brake rotors, which feature a hardened and strengthened surface to reduce corrosion. Duralife rotors – a GM-exclusive technology – are expected to last twice as long as conventional rotors and provide quieter braking with less vibration.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>The 2014 Sierra also uses electric power steering. An electric motor in place of an engine-driven hydraulic pump saves fuel and allows for tuning that’s expected to result in a more consistent, crisp steering feel and plenty of assist for parking maneuvers.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>The new standard in truck interiors</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Premium materials, attention to detail and purposeful technology define Sierra’s all-new cabin. New soft-touch materials and available aluminum trim line an interior that’s focused on usable and productive space.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>“Truck owners want a well-crafted cabin, but also one that still feels like a truck,” said Helen Emsley, Sierra interior design director. “They want a purposeful interior, not one that’s flowing like you’d find in a car or crossover.”</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Sierra has an upright instrument panel designed for visibility and accessibility. Knobs and buttons are large, legible and within reach. All knobs are coated using a rubber-over-mold technology, so they’re easy to grip even through gloves.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>A new instrument cluster on all models features six gauges with an available centrally located, 4.2-inch color Driver Information Center with vehicle status information, a trip computer, and other information, like radio and navigation.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>A second, high-mounted glove box with a flat floor joins the traditional box below. Each of Sierra’s doors has storage crafted to hold most beverage containers and other personal items. Along the center stack and center console are additional cupholders, discreet compartments large enough for most laptop computers, and connectivity options. Sierra is available with a 110-volt outlet, up to five USB ports, four 12-volt outlets and an SD card slot.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>“Sierra sets a new standard for what’s expected of a pickup truck interior,” said DiSalle. “Our customers told us how they use their trucks and we listened. The combination of comfort, safety, space and technology is unprecedented in the segment.”</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Available IntelliLink connectivity uses an available high-definition, fully reconfigurable eight-inch color touchscreen with an intuitive layout and easy-to-read icons that control audio features, a Pandora app, Bluetooth phone features, and available navigation with all-new map displays. Many of the system’s features can be controlled by voice command, allowing the driver to keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Sierra’s seats use dual-density foam designed to stay comfortable over long hours and continue to look great after years of use. Leather and cloth will be offered, and Sierra’s new high-wear cloth is designed to last longer and resist staining. A spilled drink will bead on the fabric, not soak in. Heated seats are available with cloth seats and standard with leather.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>New door and bed configurations</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>For the first time on Extended Cab models, the 2014 Sierra has new front-hinged rear doors with outside pull handles at the rear, providing improved access in tight parking spaces. Unlike trucks with rear-hinged doors, Sierra’s layout allows rear passengers to enter and exit the vehicle with the front doors remaining closed.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Crew Cab customers, who represent more than 60 percent of retail Sierra customers, can choose between two bed lengths; in addition to the current 5-foot, 8-inch box, a new 6-foot, 6-inch box is available. Regular cabs continue to be available with the 6-foot, 6-inch or 8-foot box lengths, while the extended cab will come exclusively with a 6-foot, 6-inch box.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>Cargo box innovations</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Sierra’s rear bumper features standard corner steps that make climbing into the bed easy, regardless of whether the tailgate is up or down. The steps are paired with grips formed into the top of each bed side. Four movable upper tie downs are also standard. They can be placed in nine different locations and can bear a 500-pound (227 kg) load. Available LED cargo lights integrated beneath the bed rails will illuminate the bed when a tonneau cover is in place. The available EZ Lift and Lower tailgate uses an integrated torsion bar and damper to ease lifting and lowering.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>Driver Alert Technology</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>A suite of active safety features will be optional for the 2014 Sierra, including Forward Collision Alert, which uses a forward-facing camera to notify the driver of an imminent collision, and Lane Departure Warning, which uses the same camera to track the truck’s position in relation to a road’s lane markers.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>The camera technology was recently named a “Top Ten Tech Breakthrough of 2012” by Popular Mechanics.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Paired with Forward Collision Alert and Land Departure Warning is GMC’s first-ever Driver Alert Seat, which generates vibrating pulse patterns on the left and/or right side of the lower seat cushion bolster to alert the driver of potential dangers, such as an un-signaled lane change or approaching another vehicle too quickly. According to GM research, the seat’s vibrations may direct driver attention to the location of a potential collision more quickly and accurately than audible alerts. Drivers have the option of selecting either audible or vibrating alerts.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>Quieter, stronger, more aerodynamic</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Quietness doesn’t only come from factors within the cabin. The 2014 Sierra features new aerodynamic measures that benefit fuel efficiency and reduce wind noise. Updated mirrors that reduce wind turbulence, triple-sealed inlaid doors, as well as roof and tailgate design features all help air flow smoothly quietly over the Sierra. Additional sealing around the grille, headlights and space between the cab and box are also designed to lower drag for the new trucks, along with new aerodynamic spats located in front of the rear wheels.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Updates to Sierra’s body and chassis are designed to improve ride and handling, comfort and capability. The fully boxed frame uses high-strength steel and hydroforming to provide more strength and rigidity with less weight. New cab structures incorporate high-strength steel in the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails and rocker panels, while ultra-high-strength steel segments of the rocker panels provide added protection for shallow offset crashes.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Sierra’s hood is aluminum, saving approximately 17 pounds versus a comparable steel hood. At the rear, a roll-formed box is stronger, lighter and more durable than a traditional stamped steel box.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>Sierra uses aluminum for some suspension components for additional rigidity and weight saving, and new lightweight wheels are paired with low-rolling-resistance tires in most applications. The tires, along with new shear-style and redesigned hydraulic cab mounts, are designed to help reduce noise and vibration in the cabin.</i><br /><i><br /></i> <i>“Pickups aren’t just a tool for GMC owners – they’re part of their everyday lives, and Sierra needs to be as useful on the way to the movies as it is on the way to a job site,” said DiSalle. “The most important thing about the engineering behind this new truck is that it benefits owners in so many different ways.”</i><br /><i><br /></i> <b><i>Attention to detail</i></b><br /><i><br /></i> <i>GMC designers approached the exterior of the 2014 Sierra with respect for its predecessors, evolving its familiar shape while adding distinctive details like standard projector headlamps, available LED signature accent lighting and detailed new grilles. In addition to this equipment, the convertible model receives chassis bracing components like an underhood strut tower brace, front suspension “X” brace, and rear “V” braces to stiffen the drop-top version.<br /><span class="fullpost"><br />The ZL1 convertible is meant to be more of a cruiser and less of a hard-core track car than the coupe, so instead of the 5-mode electronic stability control system in the hard top, this version gets a single "Competetive" mode. (Chevy also expects a higher take rate on automatics -- a whopping 70% of ZL1 coupes have manual transmissions, but Chevy expects a 50/50 split for the convertible.) They've also made a few interior improvements, including a stereo with touch-pads in place of buttons (like the ATS, but better) and a slick new frameless rear-view mirror. They help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output, and include third-generation Magnetic Ride Control.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>"The ZL1 is great at everything and we're very proud of that," said Tony Roma, Camaro ZL1 program engineering manager. "You can take it to the drag strip and run 11-second quarter-miles all day long. It's a supercar you can drive every day."</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>The ZL1 name is derived from the all-aluminum racing engine of the same name, which was developed in the late 1960s and installed into a handful of regular-production 1969 Camaros. Only 69 were built with the engine, but they've achieved mythical status among enthusiasts, as they represented the pinnacle in Camaro performance - until the new ZL1 was introduced.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>For 2013, the ZL1 rushes into its second year with the addition of an all-new convertible model, as well as a new color touch radio with Chevrolet MyLink - including available navigation - a frameless inside rearview mirror and a new exterior color: Blue Ray Metallic.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Camaro ZL1 convertible details</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Like the coupe, the Camaro ZL1 convertible powered by the 580-hp/432-kW LSA engine, as well as the same advanced powertrain and chassis technologies. And because the architecture for the fifth-generation Camaro was designed to accommodate a convertible model, it gives the ZL1 convertible coupe-like driving dynamics. Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure to quell the cowl and steering wheel shake common in convertibles. They include:</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>A tower-to-tower brace under the hood</i><br /><i>A transmission support reinforcement brace</i><br /><i>Underbody tunnel brace</i><br /><i>Front "X" brace and stiffer cradle as well as rear underbody "V" braces.</i><br /><i>Additional structural reinforcements in the ZL1 convertible are designed to improve noise and vibration characteristics, while also reducing unwanted ride and body motions. They include a hydroformed tube in the A-pillars, an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header, a reinforced front hinge pillar and reinforcements inside the rockers.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>The bottom line is a convertible designed to preserve nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities of the Camaro ZL1 coupe.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>MyLink details</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Camaro ZL1 includes new Chevrolet MyLink, which seamlessly integrates online services such as Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio® using hands-free voice and touch-screen controls via Bluetooth-enabled phones. MyLink adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smartphones, building on the voice-activated Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevy vehicles.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>MyLink features a high-resolution, full-color touch screen display designed to manage the number of steps required to complete a task. It also retains all the capabilities of conventional entertainment features, including AM/FM/Sirius XM tuners, CD player with MP3 playback, auxiliary and USB inputs.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Camaro ZL1's downforce-optimized design</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Most production cars are designed with some lift at speed slip through the air for improved fuel economy - but to maintain stability and steering response at the speed the Camaro ZL1 is capable of achieving, it features an aerodynamic design that generates downforce to press the tires against the track.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>The aerodynamics helped refine the exterior design to generate downforce for improved handing at speed while minimizing the amount of increased drag that could reduce fuel economy and the vehicle's top speed. With the computer-assisted design recommendations, full-scale clay models and full-size prototypes were tested in the General Motors' wind tunnel.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Outside of the aerodynamics laboratory, engineers tested the ZL1's aero aids on GM's Milford Road Course, other race tracks and the unique "rolling road" wind tunnel at the Auto Research Center in Indianapolis. When the dust settled and the wind-tunnel blades came to a stop, the Camaro ZL1 produced 65 pounds of downforce at an equivalent 150 mph (241 km/h) - compared to 200 pounds of lift in a Camaro SS - which was offset by an increase of only 40 counts of additional aerodynamic drag.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Seven elements contribute to the downforce of the ZL1:</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>1. Front fascia - The front fascia channels air for engine and brake cooling. The corners of the front fascia were shaped to minimize lift, while brake-cooling ducts in the outer corners of the lower grille opening provide a direct, high-flow path to the brake rotors.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>2. Hood - The ZL1's hood has a vented, carbon fiber insert, contributing to both engine cooling and aerodynamic downforce. The specially shaped vents draw air up through the engine bay - allowing a significant volume of air flow while keeping the front tires firmly connected to the pavement.</i><i><br /></i><br /><i>3. Front splitter - Instead of a traditional front air dam, the ZL1 incorporates a racing-style splitter to help create downforce.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>4. Front tire deflectors - The deflectors push airflow around the rotating wheels and tires more efficiently, reducing lift and drag.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>5. Belly pans - The ZL1 has two of them: one beneath the engine cradle and one at the rear of the engine assembly, just in front of the transmission. They minimize airflow turbulence under the car. NACA-style ducts are incorporated into the rear belly pan for transmission cooling.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>6. Rocker panels - Although subtle in appearance, the carefully shaped rocker panels help reduce lift and drag, while also contributing to stability during high cross winds. They also provide stone protection with the ZL1's wider tires.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>7. Rear spoiler - The ZL1's rear spoiler, which contributes approximately 150 pounds of down force at the cost of only one count of drag. It is taller and wider than the Camaro SS spoiler and incorporates the center high-mounted stop lamp.</i><i><br /></i><br /><i>In addition to the functional design elements, the Camaro ZL1 offers several aesthetic options, including a bright-finish wheel package, exposed-weaver carbon fiber hood insert and a stripe package.</i><i><br /></i><br /><i>Exterior colors include Summit White, Black, Crystal Red Tintcoat, Victory Red, Rally Yellow, Inferno Orange Metallic, Ashen Grey Metallic and Blue Ray Metallic. The convertible top color choices include black or beige.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Supercharged LSA powertrain</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Supporting the dynamic track and street performance of the ZL1 is the LSA 6.2L supercharged engine, which is rated at 580 horsepower (432kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm), with specific features for the Camaro.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>The all-aluminum engine is part of GM's legendary small-block engine family. For a solid foundation, the engine's bottom end uses six-bolt main bearing caps that clamp and lock in the forged steel crankshaft to a deep-skirt cylinder block. Additional features include:</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Balanced, lightweight reciprocating assembly</i><br /><i>High-strength hypereutectic pistons</i><br /><i>Sixth-generation Eaton supercharger with four-lobe rotors</i><br /><i>Piston oil squirters.</i><br /><i>A 1.9L Roots-style blower uses an efficient four-lobe rotor set and compact intercooler to deliver boosted air into the high-flow cylinder heads. The engine also draws its breath through a unique induction system, with a low-restriction air filter, dual inlet paths and enhanced airflow through the supercharger housing.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Because the Camaro ZL1 uses electric power steering, the engine does not incorporate a conventional hydraulic power steering pump on its accessory drive system. This enhances performance, because no engine power is used to turn a steering pump pulley.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>The ZL1 is offered with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Tremec TR6060 "MG9" manual features 30 percent more torque capacity than in the Camaro SS. The higher torque capacity results from a strengthened output shaft, high-strength rear housing, and additional roller bearing. The MG9 has also been tuned for improved shift feel, with a dual-mass flywheel, twin-disc clutch, and triple synchros for smooth, precise shifts.</i><i><br /></i><br /><i>Similarly, the Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic has been strengthened to handle the torque and horsepower produced by the 6.2L supercharged small-block. It features a strengthened input gearset with two additional pinion gears, additional clutch plate, and a strengthened output shaft and gearset. To make the ZL1 perform equally well on street and track, the 6L90 features three distinct drive modes:</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Drive: The shift pattern is calibrated for optimal fuel economy, including second-gear starts, while the shift feel is tuned for a smooth driving experience. Engaging the tap-shift feature on the steering wheel or shift lever engages temporary manual mode.</i><br /><i>Sport: The shift pattern is calibrated for more aggressing driving, including first-gear starts for maximum performance. The shift feel is also more aggressive, with a performance algorithm that holds the transmission in lower gears during aggressive driving.</i><br /><i>Manual: Here, the 6L90 offers the driver true manual control, with no automatic up shifts, and staged upshifts for incredibly fast shifts and maximum performance.</i><br /><i>Track-ready features of the ZL1's powertrain include:</i><i><br /></i><br /><i>An engine-oil cooler, identical to the system on the Corvette ZR1. The integral liquid-to-liquid system is so effective that both the manual and automatic transmissions are deemed to be fully track-capable with the standard factory-installed cooling package.</i><br /><i>A high-performance fuel system delivers fuel to the LSA engine under any performance driving condition. For example, the system features additional fuel pickups on the primary side, and the secondary fuel pickup is moved outboard for continuous fuel access during high-g cornering under low fuel conditions.</i><br /><i>The Camaro ZL1 is also equipped with a dual-mode exhaust system, which alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm and throttle position.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Chassis and drivetrain details</i><i><br /></i><br /><i>The drivetrain is unique to the Camaro ZL1 and is composed of a stronger driveshaft and rear axle system, featuring a larger, stronger 9.9-inch cast iron differential housing, stronger axles and heavy-duty limited-slip differential. This patent-pending system is designed to ensure that ZL1's tremendous power is delivered smoothly to the ground. A rear-differential cooler reduces temperatures in the differential by more than 100 F.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Asymmetrical half-shafts - a 60mm hollow shaft on the right and a 33mm solid shaft on the left - offer different torsional stiffness rates, which work with the limited-slip differential to minimize the chance of wheel hop on hard launches. Also, the rear stabilizer bar has drop links positioned outboard of the control arms, for more effective body roll control in turns, with crisp response to driver commands.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Camaro ZL1 features an advanced track-capable braking system, developed in conjunction with Brembo. Large 14.6-inch (370 mm) two-piece front rotors have six-piston calipers; the 14.4-inch (365 mm) rear rotors have four-piston calipers.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>ZL1-specific 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, which are lighter than the 20-inch wheels used on the Camaro SS, are used with new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires developed specifically for the ZL1.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Performance Traction Management and Magnetic Ride Control</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Performance Traction Management (PTM) is standard on the Camaro ZL1 coupe. It integrates the exclusive third-generation magnetic ride control - with driver-selectable Tour and Sport modes - launch control, traction control, electronic stability control and electric power steering response to enhance performance.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>With PTM, the launch control feature (manual transmission only) automatically modulates engine torque for the best-possible acceleration without excessive wheel spin. When the driver pushes the throttle to the floor, the system holds a predetermined engine speed until the driver releases the clutch. Then, the system modulates engine torque 1,000 times per second to maximize the available traction. Similarly, on a road course, the driver can apply full throttle when exiting a corner and Performance Traction Management will automatically manage acceleration dynamics to maximize exit speed based on available traction.</i><br /><i> </i><br /><i>Five PTM performance levels or modes are available to accommodate the given ambient and track conditions, driver experience/vehicle familiarity and driver comfort levels.
